Book excerpt: Civil wars have badly devastated the economies of many African countries, most particularly in the Sub-Saharan region, where millions have been massacred, displaced, rendered homeless, or driven into absolute poverty. In his novel, My Ivy Green, Killy Kandeu Chisale exposes the severity of misery and suffering that might have befallen those in countries ravaged by civil wars. In most cases, these wars are waged because of selfishness, greed, and hunger for power. Though the world is mostly concerned about the sufferings of civilians, the soldiers actively involved in combat also suffer and have sad stories to tell. The 16-year Mozambican Civil War inspired this novel. The author at one time stayed in a village on the borders of Malawi and Mozambique, witnessing many horrible things and hearing frightening stories against humanity. The basis of this novel is the product of his imagination, and the names, places, and personalities are all imaginary. My Ivy Green begins with a civil war breaking out in the African nation of Mauziland, a country sharing a boundary with Amowa. After rebels take up arms against the democratically elected government of Mauziland, a captain with the Amowa army is captured and tortured. He is treated by a nurse who helps him escape, and together they travel through enemy lines heading toward safety.
