Book excerpt: The book meets the requirement for all teachers in the lifelong learning sector to include English and Maths in their teaching and supports the teachers' ability to develop the English and Maths skills of their learners. As well as discussing learner needs in these subject areas the book provides strategies to help the post-16 learner and considers the barriers to achieving good levels of literacy and numeracy. The book is divided into two sections, one for English and one for Maths. Each section has a chapter on the core linguistic or mathematical processes and then considers the subject knowledge needed to work with this process. Each chapter then looks at ways of developing learners skills in a more general way and the issues of subject pedagogy. The final part of each chapter offers specific examples of classroom activity types that could be used and adapted by teachers. There are also reference boxes to signpost teachers to further reading and resources for each of the themes covered.
