Book excerpt: "Die Kunst, Recht zu haben" or "The Art of Being Right," subtitled "38 Ways to Win an Argument," is a biting, sarcastic treatise by the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer. In this work, Schopenhauer explores thirty-eight strategies to defeat an opponent in a debate. He begins by noting that while philosophers have extensively studied the rules of logic, they haven't (especially since Immanuel Kant) delved as deeply into the murkier art of dialectics or controversy. Whereas logic traditionally aims at finding the truth, dialectics, according to Schopenhauer, deals with the interaction between two rational beings. When these beings, expected to think alike due to their rationality, begin to disagree, it's akin to two clocks showing different times, resulting in a dispute or intellectual contest.
